Self-care; The practice taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.
Being a student in college can be extremely stressful at times trying to balance out school work, clubs, work, social life and pretty much everything else in between. Although many people have such busy schedules it can get to the point where you find yourself planning out how many times you can even go to the bathroom a day without throwing off your entire schedule. It is extremely important to be sure you are still making time to take care of yourself.
Self-care can consist of simple activities such as doing a face mask, going to the gym, painting, listening to music, etc. Overall the true form of self-care is prioritizing your mental health and although it is important to keep up with your schoolwork, in the long run, it is important for your overall health.
Never taking a break for yourself can also lead to being burnt out. Being burnout is defined as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Characterized by feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism related to one's job; and reduced efficacy,” defined by the World Health Organization.
Taking care of yourself can also improve your overall performance when it comes to getting tasks done. In therapist, Lori Moffet’s TED Talk about the “Igniting a Self-Care Revolution” she says we are better enabled to fulfill our responsibilities when our physical and psychological needs are met.
All in all, when you feel like you need to take a minute to breathe, take it, you’ll thank yourself later.
