TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Department of Art and Art History is hosting its 2019 Faculty Biennial Exhibition from Sept. 5 to Oct. 11in the Sarah Moody Art Gallery, showcasing art by UA faculty.

The art exhibition is free to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. located in the Sarah Moody Art Galley which is at 103 Garland Hall until October 11. This exhibition is open to the public with no admission fee. The exhibition features work from the department's staff including William Dooley, Allison Grant, Jason Guynes, Chris Jordan, Sarah Marshall, Giang Pham, Pete Schulte, Sky Shineman, Bryce Speed, and Craig Wedderspoon as well as welcoming new faculty members to participate in the exhibition, Jonathan Cumberland, Holland Hopson, and Wade MacDonald. The exhibition showcases various forms of studio art including ceramics, digital media, drawing, graphic design, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Exhibition coordinator Vicki Rial said the overall purpose is to “acquaint the public of what our faculty do in their own personal practice. We have assigned them by their discipline while teaching, but what they do privately as artists might be different than what they are doing in class.” The vision aimed for this biennial exhibition is to inform students and the community as to what is going on in the department as well as the larger art world. Speaking with both Rail and gallery director as well as featured artist Dooley said they want people to gain perspective, point of view, and meditation through viewing this collection of art. “The variety that comes with the faculty show, the technology, there is a language there are objects in the space where you can,” said Dooley.

Deandra Gauntt, UA freshman, said “My favorite pieces of art are ones where the metaphor and irony in the piece are there it is straight forward and easy to interpret while incorporating a fun composition and color scheme that is engaging.” After the encounter with coordinators, visitors, and artists of the exhibition, it is clear as Dooley said “Engagement with art is a beautiful thing when it is not just on Pinterest you do it in person and there is an objectness and space being with art that comes with it that is really important to experience.”
