Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Capstone International Center has started its advising sessions for studying abroad.
The Capstone International Center is currently hosting peer advising along with information sessions and workshops every Monday through Friday this fall semester. Peer advising is available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm in room 135 in BB Comer Hall, with no appointments necessary. Along with peer advising general information, workshops are also available throughout the week such as Study Abroad 101. Information sessions for course equivalency, visa research, and financials are all available on Wednesday’s at various points of the day.
Education abroad advisor Sarah Kidwell helped to break down the different programs available when studying abroad including faculty-led, UA exchange, and affiliate opportunities. Kidwell covered many scholarships available that students can apply for to help with the overall cost of studying abroad. When covering the financial aspects there are many ways for students to save through the study abroad program, for example, an out-of-state student at UA will receive an in-state tuition rate through a faculty-led study abroad program. Kidwell briefly explained the curriculum break down when studying abroad saying, “We like to say there is a program for everyone, there are over 1000 programs available in over 60 countries.”
Education abroad ambassador and junior at the University of Alabama David Meehan also shared his experience after studying abroad last year, his sophomore year of college. Meehan studied abroad for an entire year at the University of Westminster through a program called Arcadia. Meehan was able to visit many cities in different countries such as Lisbon, Florence, Venice, Berlin, and much more. After asking Meehan what regrets he had either prior during or after his trip he shared he wishes he would have been more proactive during the process of signing up for studying abroad because he had applied for the wrong visa originally. Meehan continued to share he regretted not taking advantage of all the resources, help, and advising available to him.
Overall Sarah Kidwell and David Meehan explained that if there is anyone considering studying abroad, do it! Kidwell recommended going to the study abroad 101 information session and start preparing early. Meehan said, “For anyone considering studying abroad, study abroad, go to all of the workshops available, and start preparing early.”
